Our Legislative Advocacy to End Routine Strip Searches

In 2023, we are working to pass legislation to end routine strip searches in Connecticut prisons, jails and youth facilities. We strongly believe that strip searching is state-sanctioned sexual violence that primarily serves to humiliate, dehumanize, and degrade incarcerated people. (For more on the dehumanizing effects of strip searches, see the powerful stories and narratives we have collected here.) Our proposed bill, SB 1196 was introduced by Sen. Gary Winfield, Rep. Robyn Porter, Rep. Travis Simms, Rep. David Michel, and Rep. Aundré Bumgardner in January 2023. A public hearing was held March 15, 2023 . It now needs to be voted out of Judiciary Committee, voted on in the House and Senate, passed by both and then sent to governor for signing. We need your support to gain the governor’s signature. There will be a mass rally in April. Please show up for future mass rally at the Capitol.
